Terry Family

Abstract/Description: The Terry family settled in north Durham County in the 18th century, and has a long tradition of music making. This photograph depicts the family patriarch, William F. Terry, astride his horse and wearing his civil war uniform. His wife Martha Gates Terry is second from right. Their children, from left to right are Hattie, with a guitar; William, with a fiddle; Joseph Davis, holding a horse; Mary; Marion (nicknamed "Doc") and to the right of their mother, Nancy. Descendants of the Terry family played for square dances in the 1930s, and built country music venues in the 1950s and 1960s, Clover Hill Dance Hall on Roxboro Road and the Pick and Bow on Guess Road. In the 1970s, later family members formed the Doc Branch Band.
