Durham Equalization School Discrimination Suit

Abstract/Description: Left to right: Hugh Thompson, Oliver Hill, John Wheeler and Martin A. Martin. These were the attorneys in the lawsuit brought by Black citizens of Durham, charging discrimination in city school facilities. The trial was held in the Durham Post Office building and continued for two weeks in June and July of 1950. The presiding judge of the Middle District Federal Court, Judge Johnson J. Hayes, ruled on January 26, 1951 in favor of the plaintiffs.
