Garrett Drugs in the Biltmore Hotel on East Pettigrew Street

Abstract/Description: Photograph taken just prior to its destruction by urban renewal. To the right had been the Regal Theater. The Biltmore Hotel was one of the few places between Washington, DC, and Atlanta, Georgia, where Black people could stay overnight. Many notable artists, celebrities, and wealthy people stayed at the Biltmore during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. This area of Hayti was known as "Mexico."
