Hope Valley Bus at Five Points

Abstract/Description: Although scheduled city bus service to Hope Valley did not begin until the 1950s, in 1926 or 1927 this bus was engaged by Mebane and Sharpe, the developers of Hope Valley, to take downtown prospective lot buyers to barbecue style social events in the new community. Standing fourth from right, in a light-colored suit, is Dr. Wilbert Davison, the Dean of Duke Medical School, an early lot owner and home builder in Hope Valley. He actively encouraged his new faculty members to buy lots and live in Hope Valley. In the background at Five Points can be seen a city street car, as well as the businesses Bluefield Coal and Coke, the Durham Art Shop, and the Warrenetta Hair Shop.
