Abstract/Description: | Durham Hosiery Mills, No. 1, completed in 1902. Established by Julian Shakespeare Carr in the Edgemont area of East Durham. In 1934, tens of thousands of textile workers throughout the South walked off the job protesting conditions at the mills and mill villages. Hundreds of striking mill workers from Durham rallied at the Carolina Theatre, marched down Main Street, and were met with widespread community support. | |
