Georgia Eleta Atwater Harris
Abstract/Description: | Harris was born in 1899 in Elberton, Georgia, to John Henry and Mamie Harper Atwater. The family moved to Durham when she was young. She attended Durham City schools, including the West End School, and graduated from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, in 1919. In 1922, she married Charles Harris, a music professor. In Durham, she worked for the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company for 37 years. She died in 1965. On the photograph is the inscription: "Sincerely, Eleta to Leonidas." Charles Leonidas Bynum (1897-1975) was the son of Joseph Bynum and Mariah Goodloe. He went to Wilberforce and later also worked at North Carolina Mutual in the 1920s. |
