Algonquin Tennis Club

Abstract/Description: The Algonquin Tennis Club, a private lodge for Durham's Black elite, was founded by Bess Whitted, assistant treasurer of North Carolina Mutual. This group photo was taken there at the Southeastern Tennis Tournament. Notable among those present are: bottom row, first on right, Bess Whitted, tournament sponsor; fifth from left, Arthur Ashe; second row from bottom, first on left, Dr. Robert Walter "Whirlwind" Johnson, M.D., of Richmond, Virginia, who coached Arthur Ashe.
