Abstract/Description: Topics covered include civil rights activities at North Carolina Central, and Mayo's efforts to teach about civil rights to elementary school students as a guidance counselor in Durham City Schools. Mayo grew up in Wilson, North Carolina, and moved to Durham to attend North Carolina Central. She was involved in civil rights demonstrations there and elsewhere, notably attending the March on Washington in 1963. She briefly worked for the NC Fund, which was coordinated by Howard Fuller, Ben Ruffin and Nathan Garrett, who worked in rural communities on civil rights issues. Mayo also worked for many years in the Durham Public School system where she was a guidance counselor. She conducted programs and activities for students about civil rights issues. In the interview she reflects on how Durham has changed especially in the areas of economic, housing, educational opportunities. An excerpt of the interview appeared on the North Carolina Public Radio program "The State of Things" in November 2003.
